The AABB requires facilities accredited under the Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services (BB/TS Standards) to have a written plan for the implementation of ISBT 128 by November 1, 2006 and to complete implementation by May 1, 2008. The new labeling standard ensures a unique worldwide identification system and overcomes the challenges of the current Codabar-based system.
