TRALI Research update - The blood bank industry has learned much about transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), but there is still much we do not know. In general, there appear to be donor, processing and recipient factors which increase the risk of TRALI. Resource Sharing: A Case Study - On Jan. 30 at approximately 9 a.m., Bonfils Blood Center received a call from one of our more than 200 hospital partners. This particular hospital's well-established on-site blood donor program is typically able to meet the needs of its patients, but when the emergency room received a patient involved in a serious motorcycle accident, the hospital urgently requested supplemental blood products from Bonfils. >>Read More

Rare Blood and Teamwork: A Winning Combination for Area Surgical Patient - Identifying antibodies to red cell antigens are all part of the fun for the staff of Bonfils' immunohematology reference laboratory. The majority of this department's core competencies revolve around identification of red cell antibodies (an immune response to an individual's exposure to foreign red cell antigens through events such as transfusion and pregnancy) and provision of antigen-negative red cells to patients with antibodies who require transfusion support. >>Read More

 

NEWS & NOTES - Many of our partners have inquired about the status of the AABB's new Circular of Information (COI). The last version of the COI was released in July 2002, nearly 6 years ago. According to Dr. Kevin Land, Bonfils' chief medical and scientific officer and member of the AABB COI task force, the COI was completely revamped by the task force to include new ISBT terminology, update references and address ongoing standard of practice changes. >>Read More
